Sale & Swap Archive 2009 Part 2

Novag Diablo

On offer is the same Novag Diablo shown in my Rare section. I have since acquired another and there isn’t room here for two. So this one is available for sale or swap.

The Novag Diablo is a 16 bit machine. Last in a line of high class Novag wooden auto-sensory boards which graced the chess computer scene from 1985 through to the early 90s. It has a current Wiki rating of 2059 Elo at Active chess and 2141 Elo at Tournament levels. A joy to own the Diablo has extensive features, including the possibility of linking to a Novag printer  or a PC.

This Diablo is in very good condition, fairly represented in the photographs. It is functioning perfectly and comes with the pieces, and packaging shown, a copy manual in English and a power adaptor.

Rather than sell it I would prefer a swap for one of the early (1977-1984) chess computers that I do not have yet.  Please contact me if you have an idea for a fair swap.

But as no suitable swaps have been proposed over the last month I would consider offers above £600.

Novag Super Expert B 3 20 x 20

Novag Super Expert B
     (Model 887  6 MHz)

The Novag Super Expert B dates from 1989. It is one of the nicest auto sensory wooden boards you can buy and features an informative LCD display and masses of options which include  variable selective search. Connection to a printer or PC are other possibilities. I bought one just like this in 1989, but regretfully had to let it go in 1994 to help fund a Tasc R30, which cost an arm and a leg.

The Super Expert B is currently rated at 2035 Elo on the Wiki Active Chess List, some 15 Elo points above the Super Expert C.

This machine is in very good condition. The board has no light spots, no scratches and is fully working. It comes with the original chess pieces, a copy of the instructions including the “B” addendum and a US adaptor.

Tiger Grenadier

Tiger Grenadier 4 15 x 15
Tiger Grenadier 3 15 x 15

An interesting chess computer with some advanced features including rating of your play, analysis, why not?, blunder warnings and user programmable evaluation functions.  Currently rated at 1895 Elo in the Wiki Active Chess list  it shares with the identical Millennium Genesis the only dedicated chess computer program written by Christian Donninger. Chrilly Donninger is, of course, the main programmer for the Hydra project whose aim pre-Rybka was chess world domination.

This Grenadier is in very good, fully working condition. It comes with the box, original pieces and bag, and the four manuals in the photograph (English, German, French and Dutch). It runs on 6 “C” batteries or a suitable adaptor (not supplied).

Novag Chess Champion Super System III

A piece of chess computer history ! An early version of what came to be called the Novag (or SciSys) Chess Champion Super System III. It dates from 1979, and was an amazingly advanced chess computer for it’s year. That is apart from the chess program, which only rates at  1133 Elo on the current Wiki list. In it’s complete form it included the first ever LCD Chessboard, the first ever chess computer printer, separate battery and memory packs and a smart carrying case.

The set for sale includes the carrying case, Super System III computer unit, LCD Chessboard, battery pack, power supply and main manual copies in English or German. All of the components are in good condition. The computer unit is fully working. The LCD chessboard works well, but the backlights did not work at the time I took the photograph. The battery pack is not guaranteed to work. Those that still function require a long charge. The case is in good condition.

CXG Sensor Computachess

In a futile attempt to collect all of the early CXG models I seem to keep buying models called Computachess, Sensor Computachess and Portachess. All have different boxes, brand names and combinations of control buttons, but basically appear to be the same chess computer.

Anyway, this spare is a sweet little machine. It has the usual White and Allcock 1981 copyright notice on the back. It runs on a 9V battery or power supply (not provided). It has 8 levels and the control buttons include reverse play (ie change sides).

It is in excellent condition, is working correctly and comes with the box.
